LINCOLN, Abraham, President . Carte-de-visite photograph signed ("A. Lincoln"), on album mount, by Alexander Gardner Washington. D.C. [taken 9 August 1863]. 100 x 60mm (4 x 3½ in.) approximately, enclosed in a printed mount in a bound album, the mount 160 x 125mm (6.3/8 x 5 in.), with decorative borders, signed underneath the image in bold ink, neatly captioned in 1864 by the owner of the album in the white portion of the image: "Our candidate and Our President." Ostendorf 0-72D ("The President looks up from his reading, spectacles in hand...taken in Washington on Sunday, August 9, 1863"). A pleasing, though serious image, taken a month after the Union triumphs at Vicksburg and Gettysburg had lifted Lincoln's spirits. LINCOLN, HIS CONTEMPORARIES AND FOUR PRESIDENTS [ Bound in :] The Photographic Album, New York: Carlton and Porter, n.d. [ca.1863]. 4to, 160 x 125mm (6.3/8 x 5 in.), each leaf comprising back-to-back arched window compartments for the insertion of cartes-de-visite, gilt edges, bound in dark green morocco embossed in an arabesque pattern, brass clasps, worn, loose in binding, minor soiling to some margins, the cartes all in excellent condition. Containing 49 cartes-de-visite and engraved portraits of political and military figures, 1860-1867. A typical portrait album assembled during and just after the Civil War, containing a very good selection of cartes-de-visite by Brady and Gardner plus 18 engraved portraits, including a fine Gardner of Lincoln (see above), one of President Johnson, three of future Presidents (Grant, Hayes, Garfield), cabinet members, Senators, and Union military officers. The following images carry clear ink signatures on the mount: ANDREW JOHNSON (as President, by Brady, boldly signed), ULYSSES S. GRANT (as Lt. General, excellent standing pose in uniform), Edwin M. Stanton, A. GARFIELD (n.d., pale signature on image), RUTHERFORD B. HAYES (on engraved portrait, as Congressman), John Sherman, William Evarts, Carl Schurz, S. P. Chase (signed on image), Schuyler Colfax, Charles Sumner, William H. Seward (clipped signature affixed), Thaddeus Stevens, Roscoe Conkling, George Boutwell, and B.F. Wade, Benjamin F. ("Beast") Butler, the Johnson impeachment committee (by Brady, unsigned), Postmaster D.M. Key (on slip of paper).
