Snowflower Condominiums, looking East is part of the project Park City (1978 – 79). This is a series of 102 black-and-white photographs in which Lewis Baltz undertakes a kind of topographical examination of the construction work in a formerly undeveloped area. He documents the erection of residential neighbourhoods on the grounds of a former gold mine, juxtaposing images of building debris and construction waste with pictures of unfinished building shells and houses. Like many of the conceptual and minimal artists of the 1970s, Baltz also dealt with the technologically sublime; in Park City, he tried to tap into it by training his gaze unfailingly on chaotic situations undergoing change: thus, close-ups of garbage, dirt or industrial waste. The simultaneity of building site and inhabitation, dissolution and construction is ironised inasmuch as Baltz plays with expectations and actual circumstances. He takes the official descriptions of the future settlements, for example Snowflower Condominiums, looking East, and uses them – as in the case of the mound of rubble shown here – as captions for his sad images. The critical and pessimistic basic attitude towards a technologised, consumerist society is noticeable not only in the choice of motifs, but also in the sober visual idiom. Expanding the limits of photography as a medium during the 1970s, Lewis Baltz used his works, most of them conceived as series, to revolutionise not only landscape photography – furthermore, as a proponent of the “New Topographics”, he set new standards by making humdrum and banal motifs, subjects previously unworthy of depiction, the object of his critical examination of culture. Snowflower Condominiums, looking East entsteht als Teil des Projekts Park City (1978 – 79). Eine Serie von 102 Schwarzweißfotografien, in der Lewis Baltz eine Art topografische Untersuchung der baulichen Erschließung eines vormals brachliegenden Gebiets vornimmt. Er dokumentiert den Neubau von Wohnsiedlungen auf einem einstigen Goldminengebiet, stellt Bildern von Bauschutt und Konstruktionsabfällen Aufnahmen von unfertigen Rohbauten und Häusern gegenüber. Wie viele Konzept- und Minimal-KünstlerInnen der 70er beschäftigt sich auch Baltz mit dem technologisch Sublimen, das er in Park City durch den strengen Blick auf chaotische Situationen im Wandel versucht zu erschließen: Nahaufnahmen von Abfall, Dreck oder Industriemüll rücken in den Fokus. Die Gleichzeitigkeit von Baustelle und Bezug, Zerfall und Aufbau wird dabei insofern ironisiert, als Baltz mit Erwartungen und tatsächlichen Begebenheiten spielt. Er nutzt die offiziellen Beschreibungen der zukünftigen Siedlungen, wie Snowflower Condominiums, looking East, und setzt sie – wie beim hier gezeigten Geröllhügel – unter seine tristen Aufnahmen. Die kritisch-pessimistische Gru dhaltung gegenüber einer technologisierten, konsumorientierten Gesellschaft wird nicht nur in der Motivwahl, sondern auch in der nüchternen Bildsprache spürbar. Die medialen Grenzen der Fotografie ausweitend revolutioniert Lewis Baltz in den 70ern mit seinen meist seriell konzipierten Arbeiten nicht nur die Landschaftsfotografie, sondern setzt als Vertreter der „New Topographics“ neue Maßstäbe, indem er bis dato nicht darstellungswürdige Sujets, alltägliche und banale Motive zum Gegenstand seiner kulturkritischen Enqête macht.
