LEWIN, John William (1770-1819). A Natural History of the Birds of New South Wales. London: G. Schulze for J.H. Bohte, 1822 [but 1826 or later: text watermarked 1821; plates watermarked 1826]. Small 2° (366 x 262mm). 26 fine hand-coloured etched plates by and after J.W. Lewin, with earlier states of plates 3 and 19-26 [without the plate nos.]. (Very light staining to outer blank margin of the final plate.) Contemporary red half morocco, original paper title label mounted on upper cover, spine gilt (neatly rebacked and cornered, original spine laid down, endpapers browned), modern red cloth box. Provenance : Donovan family (Framfield Place, Sussex, armorial bookplate on cream satin). FINE HAND-COLOURED COPY OF THE THIRD (FIRST COMPLETE) EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with the title page dated 1822. The first and second editions of this coveted work were published between 1808 and 1813 in London and Sydney respectively. After Lewin's death in 1819, his widow returned to England and arranged for the publication of this third edition by J.H. Bohte.
