(Idaho) Letter from L.P. Brown to "J. Will Garrison and Others of Elk City," relaying first-hand information on the Salmon River Massacre Author: Brown, L.P. Place Published: Mt. Idaho Date Published: June 19, [18]77 Description: Autograph Letter signed by L.P. Brown. 4 pp., on 4-page conjugate sheet. 25.5x20 cm (10x8"). Riveting letter from Idaho Territory conveying an account of the attack on white settlers by members of Joseph's and Salmon River bands of Nez Perce Native Americans. In part: "They killed on Salmon River some 15 men! And Mrs. Manual and child are supposed killed. The Balance of the People are Forted at State Creek and have in all about 45 men. The names of the killed on Salmon so far as known as follows... [Benjamin] Norton and all the folks then got into a Wagon and started for here when about six miles from the Crooks were attacked. Norton killed Chamberlain killed and one child Moore wounded in hip, Dus again wounded through the lungs and leg broken and since died. Mrs. Norton shot through the leg. Mrs. Chamberlain wounded in shoulder with her other child hurt. Lelm Browns and Hill were found by our men on Pickit unhurt and brought in so also were the wounded and dead... The troops arrived Saturday night and 90 cavalry..." There is a good deal more. A 5x2¾" piece is missing from the second sheet, and there is staining as well. Accompanied by a typed transcript which is also stained. The incident was reported in the New York Times, June 23, 1877, headlined: "THE INDIAN HOSTILITIES.; THE SALMON RIVER MASSACRES. THE MEN MURDERED BUT THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN SAVED AND SENT WITH FRIENDLY SQUAWS TO STATE CREEK-- THE STOCK DRIVEN OFF--THE CONDUCT OF THE TROOPS ADMIRABLE--TWENTY-FIVE MEN KILLED IN AS MANY MINUTES-IN AN AMBUSCADE--LACK OF ARMS-AMONG THE PEOPLE." Condition: The staining, which affects the typed transcript as well, renders some of the letter difficult to read, and there is the missing portion; old folds, tape repairs, paper clip mark. Good.
