Leptauchenia, Palaeolagus Oligocene White River Formation, South Dakota The Leptauchenia genus was a goat-like creature prevalent in North America during the Late Oligocene, with eyes and nostrils placed high on the head. It possessed high-crowned hypsodont teeth which were used to chew gritty vegetation. Palaeolagus, a prehistoric hare-like animal, also lived during the Late Oligocene in North America and Asia. The fossil remains of this genus are scanty due to the fragile nature of the lightweight bones. Offered here are excellent skull specimens from each of these ancient herbivores.
