LEONARD, Herman LeRoy Williams (ca 1814-1872). Oregon Territory: Containing a Brief, but Authentic Account of Spanish, English, Russian, and American Discoveries on the North-West Coast of America. Also, the Different Treaty Stipulations Confirming the Claim of the United States, and Overland Expeditions to the Columbia River, with Incidents of Peril and Adventure . Cleveland: Youngglove's Steam Press, 1846. 12 o (175 x 109 mm). (Some pale spotting.) Original blue printed wrappers; blue quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance : Thomas W. Streeter (his sale Parke-Bernet, 22 April 1869, lot 3357). FIRST EDITION. On the rear wrapper is outlined the "Emigrant Route, from Missouri to Oregon." Both Streeter and Graff state there are only three copies known. Streeter notes that "the title and wrapper title and the table of distances at the end are most interesting," though finds the text mainly a recapitulation of Irving's Astoria and Captain Bonneville. According to American Book Prices Current , this is the only copy to appear at auction. Graff 2459; Howes L-261 ("dd"); Wagner-Camp-Becker 122a.
