Beschreibung:

Handwritten notes, in pencil, comprising text and instructions to his secretary Jan Matthews for a letter to his attorney. The notes are 8 pp. on both sides of 3 sheets of notepaper and one cocktail napkin. Present is the retained carbon copy of the letter Matthews typed from the notes and sent to Isaac, and also the stamped envelope hand-addressed by Bruce to Matthews, in which he sent her the notes, with Chicago cancellation. Significant note from Lenny Bruce to his attorney, in part: “I was arrested for possession of a substance whose nature is not recognizable to the untrained eye -- only an expert can give this report… have the guy at the lab that Harvey Karman used to test the brownish powder I gave him. Ask if there are any other chemicals that are not illegal in their natural state that might cause the powder to show…’There is heroin in it’. …’The expert witness, the chemist, didn’t test it, else he would know what percent of heroin there was in it…’ Very truly yours, Lenny Bruce.” Godfrey Isaac, who died in 2015 at the age of 90, represented a number of Hollywood’s elite in civil and family matters, including Judy Garland, Anthony Quinn, Dorothy Malone, and Phil Spector. He was also a criminal attorney and, in addition to Bruce, represented Watergate defendant Charles Colson and RFK assassin Sirhan Sirhan.
