Journals of a Landscape Painter in Southern Calabria, &c.
London: Richard Bentley 1852. Large 8vo (245 x 154 mm). Half-title. 2 lithographed maps and 20 tinted lithographed plates drawn on stone by Lear from his own drawings, printed by Hullmandel & Walton. Contemporary light brown polished calf, covers with double-fillet border, spine in six compartments with raised bands, green morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, repeat elaborate overall decoration in gilt in the others, marbled endpapers, gilt edges Condition : small repaired tear to the lower blank margin of the plate facing p.6; occasional light surface damage to the leather. Provenance : Edward Lear (ticket with manuscript shelf mark “ L/3” in front pastedown); Sir Julian Goldsmid, Bart. (1838-1896, author’s presentation inscription on half title); Peter & Diana Opie (“ex Opie Collection” stamp on front free endpaper). the author’s own copy of the first edition. After spending 12 years in the author’s library, this book was given by him to Sir Julian Goldsmid and inscribed “Julian Goldsmid / with the Author’s kind regards / & thanks / Edward Lear / 15 Stratford Place. Oxford St / Jany 1. 1864”. Goldsmid would have been a influential friend to Lear: a prominent member of a the family of Anglo-Jewish bankers of the same name, he “was for many years in Parliament, and his wealth, ability and influence made him a personage of considerable importance.
