Le Songe du vergier qui parle de la disputacion du clerc et du chevalier. [Lyons:] Jacques Maillet, 20 March 1491/2. Median folio, 330 x 237 mm. (13 x 9 5/16 in.) eighteenth-century speckled calf, spine gilt, red morocco lettering-piece, later gilt-lettered imprint in lower compartment, red-sprinkled edges, binding restored, front free endpaper torn away, small stain to first woodcut (verso of title) from effaced inscription on recto, fore-margins of fols. a2-3 restored affecting text, quires a-e wormed, 2 or 3 small wormholes through remaining text, fol. g3 slightly browned, last leaf a bit foxed, lacking final blank . Collation: a8 b-m6 n8 o-s6 t-v8 (-v8 blank). 127 (of 128) leaves, unfoliated, with signatures. Type: 3:96 B1. Double column. 51 lines. Capital spaces with guide letters. Large woodcut on a1r, repeated on n8v. Rubricated: 7-line opening initial supplied in red and blue, smaller Lombard initials supplied in alternating red and blue. FIRST EDITION. The Songe du Vergier , a translation of the Somnium viridari (first printed in 1516), was composed c. 1374-76, and consists of a defense of royal judicial power against the encroaches of the ecclesiastical courts. It has been variously attributed to Raoul de Presle, Philippe de Mezieres, Charles de Louviers, and others, but its authorship remains uncertain. The large woodcut shows the author asleep under a tree, while before him appear in his dream the king (Charles V) enthroned between two crowned female figures embodying "la puissance spirituelle" and "la puissance seculiere". Provenance : "Petrus", "contemporary signature beneath colophon -- "Achapte (?) par moy francois Alligiet le 16 decembre 1552", inscription above title, marginalia ( a few notes cropped ) and underlinings in the same hand -- Bookseller's coded note dated 1824 on lower pastedown; traces of removed bookplate on upper pastedown -- (from Lardanchet, 1968, unidentified catalogue/234).
