Woodcut headpiece after Eric Kennington printed in black on onlaid gold leaf, 13 collotype plates after photographs by Lawrence. Original brown, crushed morocco by W.H. Smith, covers with single fillet frame enclosing gilt lettering on upper and press device on lower cover, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut. AN EXTREMELY FINE COPY, ONE OF ONLY 30 COPIES PRINTED ON 'CANUTE' PAPER. Numbered 17, of 203 copies in total. This work -- 'the most ambitious and handsome volume printed by the Corvinus Press' (O'Brien) -- is based on the diary kept by Lawrence during a walking tour to Horran, Urfa, Biredjik, Tell Basher and Aleppo during the seasonal break in the archaeological excavations at Carchemish. He was primarly concerned to visit the crusader castles of the area. To the diary are added the poem 'To T.E.L. February 18th 1914' by the author's brother W.G. Lawrence, and 'Three Letters to Mrs. Lawrence written during the author's journey in Syria'. Clements pp.28-30; Duvall 40; O'Brien A194.
