After the defeat of Napoleon, Larrey took up civilian practice and taught medicine in Paris. He published extensively on his medical innovations and observations. The present work on surgical pathology is his longest surgical treatise and the one that is most extensively illustrated. Volumes 1-3 and their atlas were published by Gabon in November 1829, but the edition was soon taken over by J.-B. Ballire, whose imprint dated 1830 is found on the wrappers of the Norman copy; the remaining volumes were published by Ballire in 1832 and 1836. The work is seldom found complete.
