Paris: Gabon, November 1829 (vols. 1-3 and atlas); Paris: J.-B. Ballire, 1832 (vol. 4); Paris: J.-B. Ballire, 1836 (vol. 5). 7 volumes, 8 o (210 x 135 mm [vols. 1-4], 200 x 125 mm [vol. 5], 217 x 147 mm [atlas to vols. 1-3]) and 2 o (360 x 270 mm [atlas to vol. 5]). Atlas to vols. 1-3: 30 engraved plates (1 double) by S. Botta, Ambroise Tardieu Mme. Devilliers, Franois Ple and Smith after Hippolyte Larrey, D.A. Duponchel and J.-B. Sarlandire; atlas to vol. 5: 4 engraved plates, one signed "Coutant sc.", and 13 lithographic plates by Benard after Auguste Foucaud. Vols. 1-4 untrimmed and partially unopened. (Occasional slight browning or foxing). Vols. 1-4 and atlas to vol. 5: original pink printed wrappers (vols. 1-4 rebacked); vol. 5: quarter calf gilt, paper sides (some wear); atlas to vols. 1-3: half sheep, marbled sides (rebacked in calf); modern red cloth cases. Provenance : Paul Segoud (signature ink stamp in vol. 5); Edinburgh Medical Society Library (ink stamp in atlas to vols. 1-3). EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION. After the defeat of Napoleon, Larrey took up civilian practice and taught medicine in Paris. He published extensively on his medical innovations and observations. The present work on surgical pathology is his longest surgical treatise and the one that is most extensively illustrated. Volumes 1-3 and their atlas were published by Gabon in November 1829, but the edition was soon taken over by J.-B. Ballire, whose imprint dated 1830 is found on the wrappers of the Norman copy; the remaining volumes were published by Ballire in 1832 and 1836. The work is seldom found complete. Garrison-Morton 5589.1; Wellcome III, p. 451 (without atlas); Norman 1282. (7)
