Lot details Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The three-plate bowl, mabizashi, fukugaeshi, and four-lame shikoro all lacquered red, the bowl mounted at the top with a four-tiered chrysanthemum-form tehen kanamono, the fukugaeshi decorated in gold hiramaki-e with maru ni tsuta (Japanese ivy within a circle) mon, the mabizzashi mounted with a boldly carved lion mask lacquered in roughened black and gold, the beast with a fierce expression marked by large bulging eyes and thick scrolling brows, the mouth with a row of teeth flanked by fangs. HEIGHT 26 cm, WIDTH 28.5 cm WEIGHT 2,100 g Condition: Good, original condition with wear, soiling, some flaking and losses to lacquer, the maedate with few minor chips and nicks, the lacing with some tears and minor losses. Provenance: Dutch private collection.
