Gravenhage: Hillebrant van Wouw, 1667. (sm. 4to) 7x5½, period speckled calf, spine tooled in gilt, raised bands. First Edition. Most complete contemporary account of the war between the Netherlands and England which ended in the Treaty of Breda, in which New Netherlands was taken over by the British. The surrender of Manhattan to the British forces is described, and included is one of the earliest printed occurrences of the name of New York ("Nieuw Jorck" p.43). Also of interest is the listing of vessels and goods captured by the English from the Dutch in America. The engraving on the title-page and the nine engravings in the text are striking depictions of naval battles, the burning of Manhattan, etc. There were three folding plates and a folding map, but these do not seem to have been issued in all copies, and at any rate are not present here. Howes K253; Sabin 38247. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine worn, ends chipped, front joint cracked; mostly marginal dampstaining to upper corners, portions of front flyleaves clipped, overall very good, quite rare.
