Group of letters signed from H.L. Mencken to Alfred A. Knopf.
1) Baltimore: 8 February 1948. 1 page. Typed letter signed with initial "M" to 'Dear Alfred" on Mencken's stationery. A comfortable conversation, Mencken expresses regret for Knopf's recent accident and mentions his recent "miscellaneous writing" projects. Condition : light toning to right edge. 2) Baltimore: 13 February 1948. 1 page. Typed letter signed with initials "H.L.M" on Mencken's stationery. A follow-up note on the previous topic, Mencken expressing even further regret at Knopf's pain and mentions an upcoming trip. "I had no idea your injury was so serious. I surely hope that the bones hold, and that you are fast recovering. Those four hours on the operating table must have been a heavy strain…" 3) Baltimore: [c.1948]. Mencken's typed "Memoranda for Pat", on Mencken's stationery, a listing in jest of some of formal education's miss-ups. (plus a facsimile copy) 4) Westport, CT: 15 December 1989. Typed letter signed "Pat" (Alfred A. Knopf, jr.) to Peter (Prescott) on Alfred A. Knopf, jr.'s stationery. An opinionated comment on the review of the Mencken Diaries and mentioning the attached facsimile's of 2 letters from Mencken to Pat. 5) New York: 1 March 1956. Typed letter from the law office of Stern & Ruebens. A letter to Knopf from Mencken's attorneys, enclosing a facsimile copy of Mencken's Last Will and Testament. [With:] A facsimile copy of a typed letter, Baltimore: 10 September [1940] from Mencken to Knopf; [With:] A facsimile copy of a typed letter, Baltimore: 11, March 1938 from Mencken to Blanche (Knopf's wife); [N.p, N.d.:] typed note on fragment of paper from "M" to Knopf; the original article taken from The Atlantic Monthly, titled "For Henry With Love" by Alfred A. Knopf. (May, 1959) 4 pieces of ephemera from the Enoch Pratt Free Library (Baltimore, MD); and 2 typed letters signed "Vince" from October, 1988 to Peter Prescott. Letters concerning research into the "Mencken-Knopf-Sherman" affair. an interesting collection that recalls the friendship between mencken and his well-admired publisher, alfred a. knopf. " I knew Mencken for more than forty years, intimately for well over thirty. Books have been published which describe him as a man I find it difficult to recognize.
