Beschreibung:

KNIP, Antoinette Pauline Jacqueline, née Courcelles (1781-1851) and Coenraad Jacob TEMMINCK (1778-1858). Les Pigeons. Paris: Mame for Madame Knip and Garneray, [1808]-1811. Volume I only (of 2), 2° (520 x 339mm). Half-title. 87 plates by César Macret after Madame Knip, printed in colours by Millevoy and finished by hand. (Some spotting, mainly light and restricted to margins, affecting first few plates more than others, one text leaf with segment torn from lower blank margin.) Contemporary green morocco by J. Mackenzie, 'bookbinder to the King,' covers with wide dentelle border, each inner corner with small tool of a bird perched on a tree stump, gilt spine compartments tooled with a repeated design of six long-tailed birds perched on tendrils within a multiple fillet frame, turn-ins with palmette and floral rolls, gilt edges (lower cover slightly scuffed). A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION IN A MACKENZIE BINDING. As the verso of the half-title states, the impressive plates of exotic pigeons are 'd'après les dessins de Madame Knip ... gravées, imprimées et retouchées sous sa direction.' However, publication of the 15 parts had commenced under the direction of Temminck and with the longer title Histoire naturelle générale des Pigeons . Rivalry between artist and author meant that, at the time of the ninth issue, the work was 'stolen from Themminck' (Zimmer) whose only recourse was to republish the text in 3 octavo volumes, 1813-1815. The hiatus between p. 15 of the 'Discours' and p. 23 of the general text, is excused as a 'faute d'impression.' The erratic numbering that follows varies in this copy from that given by Ronsil and Zimmer in that pp. 24-26 are numbered; p. 34 is followed first by pp. 133-135 and then by pp. 31-34 bis (forming 'L'addition à l'article du Colombe Aromatique'). The number of leaves present is the same. Volume II appeared much later in 1838-1843, again in 15 parts, but with text by Florent Prévost, and this was also the occasion for a reissue of volume I. Anker 261; Brunet V, 694; Fine Bird Books p. 86; Nissen IVB 511; Ronsil 2890; Wood p. 420; Zimmer p. 356.
