KIRCHER, Athanasius (1602-1680). Mundus subterraneus, in XII libros digestus ... editio tertia . Amsterdam: Johannes Janssonius von Waesberge & Sons, 1678.
KIRCHER, Athanasius (1602-1680). Mundus subterraneus, in XII libros digestus ... editio tertia . Amsterdam: Johannes Janssonius von Waesberge & Sons, 1678. 2 volumes, 2° (370 x 241mm). Title of volume I with engraved vignette, engraved additional title in both volumes, the first by Theodor Matham after Johann Paul Schor the second by Anthonie Siourtsma after Crispijn van de Passe, 20 engraved plates and maps of which 10 double-page and 4 folding, 5 letterpress table of which 3 double-page, 67 engraved illustrations. (Lacking two volvelles, without portrait of Kircher and Pope Alexander VII, small hole to first double-page plate, small clean tear to first folding plate, occasional browning, sometimes heavier, some spotting mainly in text but sometimes affecting plates, light soiling, crease to 2Z3 in vol. I, vol. II with wormtrack to inner margin of R3-2B2 affecting few letters from Y2-2B1, burnhole on 2R3-2R4 with tiny loss, some other small wormholes.) 20th-century half calf, gilt spine, speckled edges. Provenance : F.J. (initials on endpapers) — purchased by the Royal Institution on 9 February 1808 for £1 1s. Third edition. Graesse does not call for the portrait of Pope Alexander VII (who had died in 1667) in this edition, and it may be that the author's portrait is not required: according to auction records it is often not present. This celebrated work, based on Kircher's experiences of the eruption of Vesuvius in 1637 and the 14 days of earthquakes that shook Calabria in 1638, attempts to show that the subterranean world is composed of two interlocking systems of fire and water, and even though some of its theories were wildly mistaken, it represents the first serious effort to describe the physical makeup of the earth. The world map was one of the earliest to show ocean currents with any degree of accuracy. Shirley, The Mapping of the World 436; Brunet III, 667; Graesse IV, p. 21; cf. Norman 1218 (first edition).
