Beschreibung:

Kennedy, John F.As We Remember Joe, signed by John F. Kennedy. Cambridge, Mass.: Privately Printed, 1945 8vo (228 x 148 mm). Half-title, portrait frontispiece, in-photographic illustrations; minor toning, ink mark to p. 5, marginal soiling. Original burgundy cloth, cover and spine gilt-lettered inscribed by John F. Kennedy on front free endpapers; extremities rubbed, minor soiling and foxing to endleaves. In custom slipcase and folding chemise. [With:] Joseph P. Kennedy. 4 typed letters signed ("Joe") from Kennedy to Dr. Sara Murray Jordan, dated between 1 August 1940 and 6 February 1951. Various sizes, various places. First edition, one of 500 privately printed copies — presentation copy, inscribed and signed by Kennedy on front free endpaper: "For Bill who flew with Joe from Jack Kennedy." Bill was William F. Holzapfel, Jr., and met Joseph Kennedy when he was attached to Fleet Air Wing Seven in Dunkswell, England. Kennedy initially signed the rear endpaper by mistake, and that erased inscription is still partially legible. With a copy of a letter detailing the book's provenance. Dr. Sara Murray Jordan—the recipient of the letters from Joseph P. Kennedy, which form a part of the present lot—was prominent gastroenterologist, and a friend of the Kennedy family who treated John F. Kennedy on numerous occasions. In one of the letters, dated 23 August 1944, just after Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. was killed in action during World War II, Joe Kennedy writes: "Dear Sarah, Thank you for your kind wire. Expressions of sympathy are a real sustaining comfort in our time of trial, and we greatly appreciate yours." Following this typed note, Kenned adds the following line in his own hand: "It does seem, we've had our share." PROVENANCEMrs. Philip D. Sang (Sotheby's New York, 27 March 1985, lot 67 [book])
