Keith Vaughan (British, 1912-1977)Study For The Garden signed and dated 'Keith Vaughan/53.' (lower right); titled and further dated 'Study for The Garden 1953' (on label attached to backboard) watercolour, gouache and pen and ink on paper 13 x 16cm (5 1/8 x 6 5/16in).FootnotesProvenance With The Redfern Gallery, London, where acquired by the family of the present owner, 1 October 1973, and thence by descent Private Collection, U.K. Exhibited London, Olympia Fine Art and Antiques Fair, Keith Vaughan 1912-1977: An Exhibition of Paintings and Drawings, 26 February-3 March 2002, no. KV 167 Although entitled Study for the Garden, this small gouache bears little resemblance to the oil painting Garden made the same year. Vaughan often gave self-contained, finished paintings the epithet 'Study', and this seems to be the case here. In 1952 Vaughan moved into a flat at 9 Belsize Park and lived there until he died in 1977. He made several drawings and paintings of the garden beneath his small terrace and the present example is one of these. The arching branches and lush shrubbery contained pictorial interest for him and feature in several key works around this time (see Fruit Bearing Tree, 1953). We are grateful to Gerard Hastings for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
