JUNIUS, Hadrianus (1511-75). Emblemata, ad D. Arnoldum Cobelium , Antwerp: Plantin, 1565. 2 parts in one volume, 8° (169 x 109mm.), printer's device on title, 58 woodcut emblems by G. van Kampen and A. Nicolai after G. Ballain and P. Huys, each page within a lacework border, Aenigmatum Libellus with separate title (very lightly browned, some light thumb-soiling). FIRST EDITION of this celebrated emblem book by the Dutch doctor Hadrianus Junius (Adriaan de Jonge) with emblems after Geoffroy Ballain. It contains a letter to Sambucus, and the emblems have common characters with both Sambucus and Alciatus. Praz describes the engraved borders as 'exquisite.' Adams J444; Landwehr Low Countries 117: "best edition"; Praz p. 88. [ Bound with: ] ALCIATUS, Andreas (1492-1550). Emblemata denuo ab ipso autore recognita , with a commentary by Barthélemy Aneau, Lyon: Macé Bonhomme for Guillaume Rouille, 1566. 8° (169 x 109mm.), title within architectural border, 211 woodcut emblems by Pierre Eskirch within individual borders (very light browned, small wormhole in upper margin of last 90 leaves). Later edition. The first edition of 1531 started a fashion for emblem books which lasted for two centuries. French Emblem Books F.047; Landwehr Romanic 70; this edition not in Adams or Praz. 2 works in one volume, contemporary blind-stamped calf, front cover with panel stamp of the crucifixion, rear cover with blind panel of the resurrection, both panels surrounded by roll stamps of saints, front cover with monogram 'M. I. G.' and date 1569 in gilt, spine with raised bands, elaborately tooled with foliate motifs, ties (head and tail of spine chipped, extremities bumped and rubbed, a few small stains on front cover, a few small wormholes in rear cover, lacking three ties). Provenance : Buxheim Library (inscription on title of first work and stamp on verso); G. W. B. D. (stamp on lower margin of title).
