Scarce first edition, in the original wrappers, of this remarkable collection – a poetic celebration of Russia’s defeat of Napoleon in 1812, published by Prince N.M. Kugushev two years later. Among the featured authors were giants like Derzhavin, Karamzin and Zhukovskii as well as lesser known or even amateur (often anonymous) poets. The poems praised military and imperial patriotism in heroic or elegiac verse blending political, satirical, polemical and even folkloric themes revolving around the figure of Napoleon. ‘As it contains in its pages a great amount of poetic works of the time, it is now a rarity and very much liked’ (D.D.
