Josh Penford, London. a walnut and floral marquetry longcase clock the eight-day duration, five-pillar movement striking the hours on a bell with an inside countwheel, the 10½ inch square brass dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman numerals, Arabic five-minute outer numerals, 'meeting-arrow-head' half-hour markings and signed either side of VI o'clock with the maker's name Josh. Penford, London, the matted dial centre having a subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture with engraved decoration to the surround and ringed winding holes, the cast-brass 'cherub-head' spandrels to the four corners having engraved floral decoration between and decorative blued steel hands, the walnut veneered case with panelled marquetry decoration to the trunk door and base, with further marquetry inlay to the trunk and a lenticle glass to the door, the flat-top hood with three-quarter pillars having cast brass capitals and marquetry inlay to the door, the base with a later applied plinth, with a pair of brass cased weights, height 213cm * Biography Joshua Penford (sometime Penfold) is recorded as being apprenticed in London in 1684 to the Quaker clockmaker Francis Stamper 'At the Golden Ball in Lombard Street', becoming a Freeman of the Clockmakers Company in 1695.
