Their manner of gathering of Churches, the commodities of the Country, and description of the principall Towns and Havens, with the great encouragements to increase Trade betwixt them and Old England. London: Nath[aniel] Brooke, 1654. First edition of Johnson's famed "Wonder-working Providence": the first published general history of Massachusetts. Edward Gallagher notes that it exceeds this role as a first book by presenting a glorious vision of the New World and the role of the Puritan in it. 4to (178 x 143 mm). 4-page advertisements at end. (Lower corner of C1 torn away affecting catchword, some pale browning and spotting, some headlines shaved, pale dampstain at gutter near end.) Contemporary English blind-tooled calf (repairs to spine and cornes). Provenance : T. Bradbury (early inscription on flyleaf dated 20 May 1697); Charles Bathurst (bookplate). Church 532; Edward J. Gallagher, "The case for the New Wonder-Working Providence," Bulletin of the New York Public Library, Autumn 1973, p.10ff; Howes J-131; JCB (3) II:771; Sabin 36203; Vail 132; Wing J-771. This view is not revisionist, rather it reflects what Moses Coit Tyler felt about the work over a century ago: "it is the sincere testimony of an eyewitness and an honest man... it preserves the very spirit and aroma of New England thought and experience in the seventeenth century; it supplies us with a multitude of tints and tones which, without this book, we should not have" (Tyler, A History of American Literature , v.I, p.141). Johnson probably came to America in the Winthrop Fleet in 1633, returning to England in 1636 or 1637 to bring his wife and children to America. He was considered the "Father of Woburn," and served as its first town clerk (from 1640 until his death), and was the first military officer commissioned in Woburn. As one of the founders of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts he served as an ensign in Cooke's Company in the Pequot War, as lieutenant for the Middlesex County Troop in 1643, and was made captain in 1644. He served as Surveyor General of the military stores of the colony in 1659. Johnson was selected by the General Court to make the first official map of Massachusetts; in it he established the boundary between Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and also laid out the boundaries of Woburn and other towns.
