Beschreibung:

John Ruskin Eleven autograph letters signed, to Samuel Learoyd (5), Miss Miller, Charles H. Woodd, S.H. Holden, Dr [Henry] Attwell, Dixon and Butler, on the purchasing and loans of minerals and the Guild of St George, together approximately 14 pages, 8vo, Brantwood, Herne Hill, and Venice, 20 June 1877 to Christmas 1886, where dated, with 8 autograph envelopes Ruskin asks Samuel Learoyd to arrange a loan exhibition of agates belonging to the “Sheffield Museum” (“my stones usually look best on white silk or deep red or purple velvet”), offers a loan to Eastover House school (“would its mistress like me to send some agates and other stones for her pupils to play with and think of?”) and is anxious that the author, Dr Attwell, look after the stones he has lent him. Writing to S.H. Holden, Ruskin admits he has “at last given up the idea of the Guild's being a monied power: and contenting myself with making it ... an influence for assured good”. Ruskin set up Guild of St George in 1871 and founded the Ruskin Gallery in Sheffield in 1875, intended as an educational resource for the benefit of the people of the city.
