John Middleton (British 1827-1856) The Blown Wood Watercolour 33 x 49.5cm (12 x 19¼ in.) Provenance: The David Moore Collection Chris Beetles Ltd., London Acquired from the above by The Lord Wraxall in 2008 Exhibited: London, Chris Beetles Ltd., 'Bliss was it in that Dawn to be Alive, 1750-1850', October 2008, no.158 Middleton was one of the youngest and last members of the Norwich School of Artists, founded in 1803 by John Crome and Robert Ladbrooke Middleton studied in Norwich under John Berney Ladbrooke and Henry Bright and went on to exhibit at the Royal Academy and the British Institution. His works, whilst traditional in subject matter, demonstrate a freshness and simplicity of line so in contrast with the often overly fussy work of his Victorian contemporaries. The present two works are typically accomplished examples of his style and project a modernity which belies their age. Middleton's early death from tuberculosis at the age of twenty-nine in 1856 has often been lamented as a great misfortune for the Norwich School, robbing it of one of its greatest talents.
