JOHN HENRY FOLEY (Irish 1818-1874)
John Henry Foley was an Irish sculptor who worked in London. At the age of 13, he began to study drawing and modeling at the Royal Dublin Society where he took several first-class prizes. At 17, Foley was admitted into the Royal Academy in London where he exhibited his works from 1839-1861. The statue is a reduction of the monument erected in Ireland in front of Trinity College in Dublin in 1861. Oliver Goldsmith (Irish 1730-1774) was a prominent novelist, poet, and playwright particularly known for his novel The Vicar of Wakefield and he is thought to have written the children's tale The History of Little Goody Two-Shoes , the origin of the phrase "goody two-shoes".
