(Jewellery, Watches & Silver, 8th December 2020) Emin Relief Expedition Star Birmingham 1889, of five pointed form, plain reverse and a central medallion with the monogram of the Royal Geographical Society with an inscription 'EMIN RELIEF EXPEDITION / 1887-9 Width: 50mm The expedition was sent to Africa by the Royal Geographical Society. The purpose of the expedition was to rescue Emin and his followers after the Sudan had been abandoned to the Mahdi after 1884/5. Emin Pasha was the Governor of the Equatorial Province of the Sudan. The expedition lasted nearly two years and transversed Central Africa from the West to East coast and suffered many hardships and dangers. Of the 748 African participants, about a third survived. The expedition was led by Henry Morton Stanley, explorer. 200 medals were produced, nine were named.
