(C2 with marginal tear crossing several lines of text, small internal paper flaw on D2 affecting one letter, gathering a with some tiny wormtracks in gutter margin, stain on i7, some pale dampstaining at beginning.) Contemporary limp vellum, early manuscript numeration in ink on front cover. Provenance : Chaparon de Dedoro? (inscription on title). THE RARE FIRST EDITION OF THE EIGHTH JESUIT RELATION, containing those textual variants noted by Bell: “There were numerous reprintings and ‘gatherings’ of the sheets of the two parts of this Relation. The errors in the text are mostly due to careless composition and proofreading; careless gathering and collation are responsible for the numerous mixed copies. The result is one of the most complicated bibliographical problems of the entire series” (Bell, p. 34). In part I, Le Jeune refers chiefly to work on the St. Lawrence. He ANNOUNCES THE FIRST MISSIONARY APOSTOLATE OF WOMEN IN THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH WITH THE FOUNDING OF THE URSULINE CONVENT AT QUEBEC, and notes the rejoicing there over the birth of a son to Louis XIII. “A considerable amount of attention is given to the superstitions and the religious beliefs of the Indians and their hindrance to the work of the Jesuits” (Bell). Part Two, a Huron relation spanning from June 1638 to June 1639, was the work of Father Jerome Lalemant and addressed to Le Jeune. He describes in some detail the physiography and ethnology of the Huron region and the personnel of varied work of the priests assigned to it.
