Provenance Brandstrom Stene Gallery, Stockholm Johann König Berlin Catalogue Essay Combining technology and humour with the minimalist and conceptual traditions of the 1970s, Jeppe Hein creates witty, experiential sculptures and installations that explore the relationship between art and the spectator. Directly influenced by the human body, this work is only activated in the presence of the viewer, whose physicality triggers a sensor to ignite a flame in the wall that grows larger and more threatening as it is approached. Playing with the paradox of repulsion and desire, Hein warns us to ‘bear the consequences’ as the spectator is encouraged to engage in a playful discourse of danger and desire. Using the body as an integral part of the work, Hein focuses on the experience of the viewer to create a powerful dialogue that challenges the ritualistic boundaries between art and the audience.
