Contemporary sheep with black lettering labels, with the binders ticket of the National Intelligencer (see note). 8 1/2 x 5 inches (22 x 13 cm); half-titles, portrait frontispiece in vol. IV. With the ownership signatures of Joseph Gales Eckington, publisher of the National Intelligencer and later mayor of Washington D.C., chips to labels, joints tender and binding rubbed, foxing. An interesting association between Jefferson and the publisher of many of his speeches and works, the important 19th century newspaper The National Intelligencer. Howes R60; Sabin 35891.
