JACQUIN, Nikolaus Joseph (1727-1817, Baron von). Selectarum Stirpium Americanarum Historia. Vienna: Joseph Kurtböck for Kraus, 1763. 2° (353 X 227mm). Engraved title vignette, 2 head-pieces, emblematic frontispiece and 184 plates (1 folding, 5 double-page) after Jacquin. (Lacks half-title.) Contemporary calf (worn). Provenance : John Peachey, Sussex (bookplate dated 1782); West Dean Library, Sussex (library label, manuscript date 1813); Lindley Library, Royal Horticultural Library (stamp on title, cancelled bookplate). FIRST EDITION. Jacquin was asked by Emperor Franz I of Austria to undertake a plant-hunting trip to the Americas. He left Austria in 1754 and finally sailed from Leghorn on 1 Jan 1755. For the next four years he explored the Antilles and parts of South America, and despite the debillitating effect of the climate made a large collection of plants, natural-history specimens and ethnographica. On his return to Europe he concentrated on publishing his discoveries and improving the gardens at Schoebrunn. He subsequently became professor of Botany at Vienna and was raised to the baronage by Emperor Franz II in 1806. Nissen BBI 979; Sabin 35521; Hunt 579; Stafleu & Cowan 3243.
