The company ordered stock of restricted ranges of titles on the basis they were not subject to return, and used self-employed distributors to sell direct to customers. Bulk purchasing gave price priority and usually Ted Smart added his own imprint to clarify editions. Nigel Newton of Bloomsbury publishers noted the Ted Smart edition 'just happened because it was the norm in supplying The Book People'. Bloomsbury subsequently decided it was not the way to proceed with the Harry Potter titles and ceased the connection in 2000 after publication of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. There are variations in the dust jacket design from the correct 1997 first edition. This copy has been inscribed 'To Rachel' by numerous members of the cast on the verso of the front free endpaper, half title and verso, title page and verso.
