"THE NEXT MORNING THERE WAS AN APPEARANCE OF MYSTERIOUS MOVEMENT AND AGITATION AMONG THE NATIVES ON SHORE": a fine Irving fragment describing Columbus off Haiti and the incident where the brother of Guacanagari came aboard "under the pretext of bartering a quantity of gold." Guacanagari was seen conversing with Indian women, particularly Catalina "the one whose distinguished appearance had attracted" his attention. "It would seem, from subsequent events, that the warm heart of the cacique had been touched by the situation of this Indian beauty, and captivated by her charms, and that, with a kind of native gallantry, he had undertaken to deliver her from bondage." At bottom is a footnote from Peter Martyr. Only one other fragment from Irving's life of Columbus has appeared at auction in the past 25 years. A pencilled note on verso dated 1898 records the gift of the fragment from Irving's niece. [ With: ] IRVING, Washington. A History of the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus . New York: G. & C.
