The 1962 International Writers' Conference was held at the McEwan Hall, Edinburgh under the auspices of the Edinburgh Festival Society on 20-24 August. The conference--which was on the subject of 'The Novel Today'--was organised by the well-known literary publisher John Calder, who invited seventy writers from twenty countries. It gained some notoriety for the argument between Alexander Trocchi and Hugh MacDiarmid; MacDiarmid called Trocchi 'cosmopolitan scum', and Trocchi, with whom Burroughs and Miller sided, replied: 'I am only interested in lesbianism and sodomy'. Peter Keen is a photographer who was commissioned to photograph the conference for The Sunday Times . Keen's other work includes portraiture (two portraits of Barbara Hepworth by him are held by the National Portrait Gallery), and he was commissioned to illustrate Ted Hughes's collection of poetry River (London: 1983). The present set of later prints are sold with the copyright and the original negatives. (9)
