Index librorum prohubitorum et expurgatorum . Ed. Bernardo SANDOVAL Y ROJAS (1546-1618). Madrid: L. Sanchez, 1612.
Index librorum prohubitorum et expurgatorum . Ed. Bernardo SANDOVAL Y ROJAS (1546-1618). Madrid: L. Sanchez, 1612. 2 o (284 x 193 mm). Engraved title by Diego de Astor woodcut initials. ('Ad Lectorem' leaf trimmed at top, tear in last three leaves, the last repaired with loss of a few letters, a few other marginal tears.) Contemporary calf gilt, arms of the See of Canterbury impaling those of George Abbot, Archbishop of Canterbury on each cover (some wear at edges, spine repaired at ends, lacking ties). Provenance : George Abbot (1562-1633), Archbishop of Canterbury (binding), who gave most of his library to his successor at Lambeth where it "practically formed the nucleus of that great collection" ( DNB ); Duke of Bedford, Woburn Abbey (bookplate, sold Sotheby's London, 15 June 1964, lot 94). The censure of books in Spain was established in 1502 by Ferdinand and Isabella and not abolished until 1812. The first index of prohibited books was published in 1547. A FINE ASSOCIATION COPY: "English Catholics were dismayed at Abbot's elevation [to Archbishop of Canterbury in 1611], for, as one fairly observed in March 1611, 'he is the sorest enemie that ever we had' (Westminster Cathedral Archives, series A, x, p. 41). Using teams of spies, informers, and pursuivants, Abbot infiltrated Catholic circles, seized priests, and compiled dossiers on suspects. Catholics attending mass at foreign embassies in London found themselves under arrest, and Abbot pushed for the execution of imprisoned priests, writing in 1614 that he 'never tooke delight in spilling of blood, but the insolencies of such persons at home and abrode doth deserve some deeper castigation then heere is layd upon them'" ( DNB ). He published many books, most notably his Exposition on the Prophet Jonah (1600), and Geography, or a Brief Description of the Whole World (1599), which passed through numerous editions. Goldsmith, Spanish and Portuguese STC 140.
