Beschreibung:

INCUNABULA] BRIXIENSIS, BARTHOLOMAEUS. Casus decretorum . Basel: Nicolaus Kesler, 9 August 1489. First edition. BOUND WITH DE DALEN, MICHAEL. Casus breves Decretalium Sexti et Clementinarum. Cologne: Johann Koelhoff 1485. Original shaped wooden boards, retaining portions of upper and lower clasps, lacking the leather covering, spine stitching exposed, protected in a modern clamshell case. 11 x 7 3/4 inches (28 x 20 cm); Ad I: 190 ff., collating ab^(8)c-z^(6) tau^(8) [reverse c] [small letter t with caron]^(6) chi^(8), two columns, 50 lines, with fine rubricated initials, paragraph marks etc. throughout; Ad II: 145 ff., a-l^(8) m^(4) n-p^(8) q^(9 of 10, but see below) r^(8) [bound out of order, but complete] st^(6), two columns, 41 to 43 lines, decorated as the previous work. Boards (and last signature of the second work) detached, boards lacking covering as noted. Stamps of the Bar Association on a1, a large, unpressed and generally clean pair of works, although a1 of the first work with some fraying, and with a small loss to the lower blank margin, a faint dampstain visible in the first two signatures, also some staining evident in the lower gutter of the last three signatures of the second work by De Dalen, and a few minor defects otherwise. An initial endsheet bears a late fifteenth century inscription elegantly and legibly written in contracted Latin, reading in part: "M[a]g[iste]r Jacobus Wilhehm legavit hu[i]c libru[m]..." Two rare legal texts bound together. Though the second work in our volume appears to lack q6 (stub present), the copy at the Universitats- und Landesbibliothek Dusseldorf, with which ours was compared, also lacks this leaf and has an identical stub, so it appears likely that this was deliberately cancelled rather than arbitrarily extracted. The first work is Goff B151; HC 2472; Pell 1852; Polain(B) 513; BMC III 768; BSB-Ink B-102; GW 3426. The second work is Goff M534; HC 4661*; Polain(B) 2688; BMC I 226; BSB-Ink M-364; GW M23134.
