Continental (Swedish), ca 1926. A rare and important Swedish crystal glass vase designed in 1926 for Orrefors by Edward Hald (1883-1980), one of the most noted designers at the glassworks. Enhancement of Hald's design, with alternating panels depicting displays of cacti variations being viewed by women in fashionable period dress has been elegantly executed by Orrefors Master etcher/engraver Wilhelm Eisert . It is identified on the underside by the etched mark Orrefors.H.562.27.WE; ht. 7.25, dia. 7.5 in. Cactus Exhibition is an exceedingly rare design by Hald, with only four other examples known to exist. These vases are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Museum of Sweden, the Museum Kunstpalast in Dusseldorf, and in the Private Collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The hiring of Edward Hald by Orrefors in 1917 was part of an effort by Johan Ekman, who bought the glassworks in 1913, to infuse its products with the aesthetic and spirit of modern design. Hald and his contemporaries, including Simon Gate and Knut Bergqvist, were encouraged to experiment with both style and technique. Hald was at one time a student of Matisse, and the Modernist master's influence can be seen in many of his designs. For over 260 years, since its beginning in 1726, Orrefors has won thousands of design and glassmaking awards, with their innovative works gracing prestigious museums and many notable private collections. This piece is a brilliant example of the modern and highly-skilled craftsmanship synonymous with Orrefors. Condition: Several scratches on bottom. A light scratch to side, 1.5 in. Several very minor chips to side. Missing undertray.
