A beautifully hand-colored photograph of an unidentified woman, signed at lower right Bendann. 15.25 x 19.25 (sight), 25.25 x 29.25 with frame. Daniel Bendann (1835-1914) was a prominent Baltimore photographer. He studied the art of the daguerreotype under J.H, Whitehurst in Richmond, Virginia in the early 1850s, partnered with his brother in Baltimore ca 1854-1873, and was contracted by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, the State of Maryland, and New York photographer Abraham Bogardus His obituary stated that he was a master self-promoter and his social skills won him prominent and wealthy clients, including Edgar Allen Poe, Presidents Buchanan and Hayes, Edwin Booth, and Generals Robert E. Lee and Phil Sheridan. Bendann's brother David left the photography business to open an art gallery, and the brothers were well known for turning photographic enlargements into fine oil and watercolor portraits, as seen here.
