Title: Illustrations of the Conchology of Great Britain and Ireland Author: Brown, Captain Thomas Place: Edinburgh Publisher: W.H. Lizars Date: 1827 Description: Unpaginated, with 53 hand colored plates. (Large 4to) 34x26 cm (13x10½") bound in three quarter black and brown leatherette, raised spine bands, spine lettered in gilt. First Edition. 53 beautifully hand-colored plates (the plates are numbered to 52; there is an "x" and a "10" plate). After leaving the army and a brief, unsuccessful venture as a mill owner (The mill burned to the ground shortly after he acquired it), Thomas Brown (1785- 1862) turned to writing and illustrating books on natural history and was for over twenty years curator of the Manchester Museum. Lot Amendments Condition: Some wear and rubbing to binding; foxing and some offsetting to descriptive pages, generally not affecting colored plates; very good. Item number: 284798
