First Edition. 53 beautifully hand-colored plates (the plates are numbered to 52; there is an "x" and a "10" plate). After leaving the army and a brief, unsuccessful venture as a mill owner (The mill burned to the ground shortly after he acquired it), Thomas Brown (1785- 1862) turned to writing and illustrating books on natural history and was for over twenty years curator of the Manchester Museum. Lot Amendments Condition: Some wear and rubbing to binding; foxing and some offsetting to descriptive pages, generally not affecting colored plates; very good. Item number: 284798
