Beschreibung:

Qur'an. Arabic manuscript on glazed paper. India (possibly the Deccan), circa 1650. 384 leaves. 279 x 145 mm. Written space 210 x 105 mm, 14 lines per page in a bold naskhi script on full gold grounds throughout, margins ruled in multicolored filet borders, sura headings in white within a heightened gilt panel ruled in orange, single verse divisions of gold roundels with orange dots, 2 double pages of illumination at front and end. Full 19th century morocco gilt extra in Arabic style, by Zaehnsdorf. Occasional light rubbing and minor paint loss, upper margin lightly dampstained throughout, a few discrete wormholes to gutter margin at center and fore edge tears expertly repaired, otherwise a very attractive and well preserved example. Sheila Canby of the British Museum identifies this qur'an of a style produced in India for the Persian market, with a characteristic shade of blue typical of craftsmen from the Deccan. This elaborate and elegant qur'an is especially unusual for the full panel of gold ground to each leaf, the extra gilt making the volume surprisingly heavy for its size. Provenance: Henry White his bookplate to rear flyleaf; his sale, Sotheby's London, April 21, 1902, lot 1279. See illustrations.
