ILLUMINATED INITIAL Q, cutting from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM
ILLUMINATED INITIAL Q, cutting from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [Italy, early 12th century] 174 x 126mm. The initial staves with panels of interlace of blue, green and red outlined with yellow wash; the tail, and infill of foliage of the same colours. The initial is around and above the incipit 'Quid mirum si aeterna dei sapientia'. The cutting and initial is the width of the single column of 21 lines of text on the verso written in caroline minuscule. This is the opening of Chapter 19 of Gregory the Great's Moralia in Job : CCCL , 143B, p.956. Gregory the Great (Pope 590-604), the fourth and last of the traditional Latin doctors of the church, left a considerable body of writings, of which the Moralia was the most widely disseminated, and one of the most popular works of scriptural exegesis throughout the Middle ages and into the Renaissance. It was an essential to any monastic library. It is a commentary in 35 libri on the Book of Job, examining it verse by verse and offering the literal, allegorical and ethical meaning of each. The colours and forms of the initial and fine caroline script make this an excellent example of early romanesque manuscript production in Italy.
