Beschreibung:

An Historical Narrative and Topographical Description of Louisiana, and West-Florida, comprehending the River Mississippi with its Principal Branches and Settlements, and the Rivers Pearl, Pascagoula, Mobille, Perdido, Escambia, Chacta-Hatcha, &c.
Philadelphia: Printed for the Author and sold by Robert Aitken, 1784. 8vo (202 x 122 mm). Modern half morocco. Condition : minor toning, bottom portion of the terminal leaf clipped (without loss to text); minor rubbing. Provenance : Jay T. Snider. first edition of an early american description of louisiana territory and west-florida . Serving as a British officer during the French and Indian War, Hutchins, who was born in New Jersey, resigned his commission during the Revolution. Following the war he was appointed “Geographer to the United States” and issued this work describing the history and geography of the vast Louisiana Territory, as well as West-Florida. His descriptions were based on first-hand knowledge, having travelled and resided in the region between the wars. Contemporary advertisements suggest the accompaniment of a map, however no such addition has been found (and the Streeter copy in original wraps showed no signs of a map ever having been present). Evans 18532; Howes H846; Sabin 34056; Streeter Sale 1521; Vail 705.
