(Title and preliminaries waterstained, quires K-L with light worming at bottom margin, occasional light spotting and soiling.) Contemporary calf, gilt spine compartments (extremities rubbed, some restoration to spine). Provenance : William Anthony Glynn (bookplate and inscription; earlier bookplate erased).

Contemporary calf, gilt spine compartments (extremities rubbed, some restoration to spine). Provenance : William Anthony Glynn (bookplate and inscription; earlier bookplate erased). FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE with L3 uncancelled. A recasting of book 3 of Hume's Treatise of Human Nature , the Enquiry was presented as a set of connected essays, the form of work Hume enjoyed most. 'In my own opinion (who ought not to judge on that subject), [it] is of all my writings, historical, philosophical, or literary, incomparably the best,' he observed ('My own life', in Essays , xxxvi).
