Title: Hornbook with printed sheet containing alphabet, etc., under horn covering, with leather-covered paddle embossed with an effigy of Charles II on horseback Author: Place: England Publisher: Date: 17th-18th century? Description: 11x5.5 cm. (4¼x2¼") including handle, leather over boards, the horn covering attached by metal rim tacked to board. In custom-made half morocco & cloth folding case. Captivating early hornbook, an example of which is described in a Sotheby's catalogue of 1896, as quoted by Tuer, p.460 (2nd ed.): "Horn-Book, Roman letter containing the Alphabet, words of two letters, and the Lord's Prayer, protected by a thin pane of horn, with brass rims, the back covered with leather, having stamped thereon the effigy of Charles II. on horseback..." Lot Amendments Condition: Modest wear, the horn covering with a few splits, the leather on the back with some creasing and rub marks; very good. Item number: 256507
