HORAE, use of Rome (Latin and French). Ces presentes heures a lusage de Romme... Paris: 20 August 1496. Chancery 4to, 206 x 140 mm. (8 1/8 x 5 1/2 in.), contemporary limp vellum, small yapp edges, contemporary manuscript title lettering on spine, edges stained blue-green, lacking ties, worn, two-part brown morocco pull-off case, first few quires detached from lowest sewing cord, foxing to title and a few leaves, some minor dampstaining to gutters, slight smudging to initial on e6 and line-filler ornament on g1, g3 upper margin repaired, small stain to g3-7, some marginal soiling . Collation: a-k8 l4 A8. 92 leaves. Types 1:98B (text); 2:65G (text of almanac); 4:130G (heading). 27 lines. Pigouchet's wodewose device (Renouard 919) on title, woodcut of Anatomical Man on verso, almanach for 1488-1508 on a2r, woodcut of the Holy Grail in the form of Christ's Wound on a2v, 15 other large metalcuts (Fairfax Murray French set 2, i.e., Pigouchet's third set) and 32 small cuts, metalcut pictorial and decorative page-borders, many criblé, including Pigouchet's complete Dance of Death suite (Claudin II, 52-53). Rubricated: liquid gold initials, paragraph marks and line-fillers painted on alternate red and blue grounds, capital strokes in liquid gold, in a fine contemporary hand; ruled in red throughout. The two woodcuts and two of the metalcuts were used in earlier Pigouchet/Vostre editions; the remaining metalcuts and all of the borders except the calendar-borders are new to this edition.
