Folio, 640pp., printed on fine laid paper, numerous woodcut illustrations in the text. Original publisher's vellum over heavy boards, uncut (minor soiling, old ownership stamp). FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of the future President and First Lady's collaborative, deluxe, modern translation of Agricola. De Re Metallica is a classic manual of mining techniques and practices, with detailed descriptions of smelting, foundry operations and metallurgical science. LIMITED EDITION, one of 3000 copies. PRESENTATION COPY, boldly inscribed in ink on front blank leaf: "To Dennis Searles from H. C. Hoover." Lou Henry Hoover was the sole woman geology student at Stanford. She eventually mastered eight languages. Her work with her husband on this massive translation required five years of "strenuous exertion, consuming evenings, weekends," they reported.
