Provenance : Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Stickney Fund (bookplate dated 1871 and 1890; stamps). FIRST EDITION OF HOOKER'S GREAT EARLY WORK, WITH "EXQUISITE PLATES" (Rosove), published as three parts in six volumes. Part I is sub-titled 'Flora Antarctica' and part II: 'Flora Novae-Zelandiae'. The third part (not included here) was the 'Flora Tasmaniae'. "The first two volumes, dated respectively 1844 and 1847,... comprised Hooker's original work from the Auckland Islands and Campbell Island (vol.I) and his work plus that of others from Tierra del Fuego, the Falkland Islands, the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands, South Georgia, Tristan da Cunha, and the Kerguelen Islands (vol.II)... The remaining four volumes are largely a compendium of others' botanical work. [Most of the]... exquisite plates were executed by the famous botanical artist Walter Hood Fitch (1817-1892); the coloration was magnificently done" (Rosove).
