Hood's Texas Brigade. Calcasieu. The 1st, 4th, 5th Texas, and 18th Georgia, Hampton Legion.
Richmond: 1 October 1862. Broadside (315 x 220 mm). In various type and within a border. SIgned in print by Arthur H. Edey, Agent Fifth Texas Volunteers. Condition : folds, with very minor splits at edges, overall near fine. Provenance : Jefferson Davis (contemporary inscription on verso: “To his Excellency the President”). a rare and desirable confederate broadside, with provenance to jefferson davis . This rare broadside glorifies the activities and successes of John Bell Hood's Texas Brigade. The text of the broadside includes an extract from a letter by Gustavus Smith and the text of a 21 September 1862 letter by Robert E. Lee lauding the brigade. The broadside includes the names and dates of the battles in which they had partipated, including Seven Pines, Gaine’s Mill, Manassas, Sharpsburg, etc. At the bottom of the broadside appears the names of the Texas delegates to the Confederate States Congress, and the lyrics to the song “Hood's Texas Brigade.” Hood’s Brigade served primarily with the Army of Northern Virginia, and distinguished themselves at the Seven Days', Gettysburg, and during the Wilderness campaign. This broadside was printed when Hood received a promotion to major general in 1862. Parrish & Willingham locate but three copies (Boston Athenaeum, University of Georgia, and University of Texas); and OCLC locates another at the Library of Virginia. This copy is the only one which we could locate appearing at auction. Parrish & Willingham 4884.
