HOLLAND - TRAMEZZINO, MICHELE ( fl. 1539-62).
HOLLAND - TRAMEZZINO, MICHELE ( fl. 1539-62). Hollandiae Batavor. veteris insulae et locorum adiacentium exacta decriptio. Venice: Michele Tramezzino, 1558. Engraved map of Holland by Jacob Bos, 528 x 381mm, trimmed with original extended margins (Some light discolouration to centre-right, a crease running from left to centre of map.) A very rare and highly important map of Holland, here in its second state. It was derived from Jacob van Deventer's work, based on his own triangulated surveys. Deventer's map of Holland was printed in Mechelen in 1542, and the only copy to survive into modern times, is held at the Stadtbibliothek Breslau, but was destroyed in World War II. Michele Tramezzino's 1556 edition is the earliest surviving record of this ground-breaking work. The map was skillfully engraved by Jacob Bos, and shows the entire length of Holland, featuring the mouth of the Rhine, the great market towns, the numerous meers, and the chain of sand dunes running up the North Sea Coast. The sea, represented by sinuous waves is enlivened by merchant ships, the lifeblood of the province's economy. Due to the rarity of Deventer's original, Tramezzino's version became the source map for the region, notably copied by Gerard de Jode in his 1565 Antwerp edition. Karrow no.25/4.3 (variant), Tooley: 1939 no.299, Woodward: 1996 watermark 240.
