Holbrook, having qualified in medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, spent four years travelling in Europe. Whilst in Paris, his friendships with Valenciennes, Dumril and Bibron turned his attention towards the study of reptiles. He returned to America in 1822, settled in Charleston, South Carolina, and soon after determined to undertake a monograph on the reptiles and batrachians of the United States.
