Historic Letters, Documents, Five Signed Items. Including: 1) Gladstone, William E. (1809-1898) autograph letter signed, 15 February 1842; three page letter inscribed on small wove bifolium, with a response from the addressee on the final verso page. To Excise-Chairman John Wood concerning the accuracy of a list of towns to be used in a bill, written as Vice President of the Board of Trade, with Wood's handwritten and signed response. Old folds, dusty, old mount remnants, 7 x 4 1/2 in. 2) Maria Theresia Walburga Amalia Christina (1717-1780) autograph note initialed, Vienna, 6 September 1780, small 12mo-format sheet, 6 x 4 in. [and] a secretarial receipt signed, 7 September 1780, folio, laid bifolium inscribed on one page, both documents in good condition, 12 1/4 x 8 in. 3) Maria Theresia Walburga Amalia Christina (1717-1780) secretarial letter signed, Vienna, 28 November 1763, single folio laid paper sheet, inscribed over one page. To one of her uncles (a Prince), notifying him of the death of her daughter-in-law, Princess Isabella of Parma (1741-1763), wife of her son, Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor (1741-1790), some toning to top section, slight edge chipping, closed tears, tape repairs to verso, old folds, 14 x 9 in. 4) Mark Sittich von Hohenems, Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg (1574-1619) secretarial letter signed, 5 September 1616, four page letter inscribed over a folio-format laid paper bifolium, with original addressed sealed self-envelope. To Archduke Ferdinand (1578-1637) [the later Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II], politely but categorically refusing military assistance, admonishing him for raiding and pillaging the Venetian territory of Pontebba, and declaring his current neutrality in the conflict. Generally very good with old folds, the envelope torn when it was opened, 12 3/4 x 8 1/4 in. 5) Raitenau, Wolf Dietrich Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg (1559-1617) secretarial letter signed, 11 November 1598, two-page letter inscribed over a folio-format laid paper bifolium, with original seal and address panel intact. To a person of nobility, asking that a loan be repaid. Old folds, some toning, 12 1/4 x 8 1/4 in. (5)
